New Delhi "Why value-added services? Internet service providers (ISPs) require value-added services to differentiate from their competitors," said Sharat Sinha, Products Manager, voice services provider LOB, Cisco Systems.According to him, there are six value-added offerings that can be used by ISPs needs to add value to their services, which in turn will reflect in better revenues.
He listed the six as:
First, the concept of a premium ISP, which offers its select, higher-paying users better access. "This," he said, "could be done by directing premium subscribers to high availability servers and using caching at the (ISP) end."
Second, the concept of wholesale dial and private label Internet, under which a wholesale ISP has the physical ports, which in turn isused by retail ISPs to sell services to their customers.
Under this and the private labelling system, the enterprise accesses the retail ISP. Once authenticated, the enterprise employees, get free access to the Internet, Sinha said.
Third, unified communications combines asynchronous services like e-mail, voice mail and fax with a synchronous service voice. The control, however, remains with the end-user.
Sinha said the fourth option is Internet call waiting which allows the user to know when there is an incoming call.
