Briefing

Tea production up by 6.5 per cent in July 2000
Contributing to the higher output trend during the current year, tea production increased by 6.5 per cent to 106 million kg in July, 2000 against same period last year. The production increase resulted in a growth of 8.2 per cent to 395 million kg during January-July, 2000, according to a report by Indian Tea Association (ITA). The increase in production during the first seven months was mainly due to a better harvest of the Orthodox category which shot up to about 49 million kg from 34 million kg last year.

The production of CTC tea increased by about 15 million kg while other categories witnessed a marginal rise over the period. However, the output increase during the month in tea estates of north-east and eastern India was somewhat offset by a decline in production in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, which together witnessed a fall by 2.6 million kg over July, 1999.
