Tea exports up 4.1 m kg till Aug

Calcutta, Oct 4: India's tea exports between January-August this year increased by 4.1 million kg, even as theindustry was trying hard to achieve the set export target of 225 million kgsfor 2000, Tea Board officials said. Total exports during the periodincreased to 117.11 million kgs from 113.01 million kgs in the correspondingperiod last year, they said. They, however, conceded that tea exports inAugust was down by 1.76 million kgs at 21.24 million kgs compared to 23million kgs in August 1999. Industry sources said, the decline in teaexports in August was unlikely to have any impact on the overall exporttarget. But, they were not sure whether tea exports would touch the targetedfigure. The recent floods in major parts of the tea growing areas of WestBengal is expected to have an adverse impact on production and exports, sources said.
