Will it be Mirc's envy? Videocon Intl unveils Internet TV for Rs 21,990

Mona Mehta
Mumbai: The Rs 4,000 crore Videocon International has embarked on a major pricing strategy for its latest micro-chip embedded Internet television in India. The consumer durables major is introducing its Internet television at a price point which is lower when compared to competitor Mirc Electronics' Web-Cruiser. Videocon's Internet television is priced at Rs 21,990, whereas Web-Cruiser, a Web-enabled television with set-top box of Mirc Electronics, is priced higher at Rs 24,990. The move comes in tandem with the company's plans to continue selling the set-top boxes which were introduced six months back. In the five million Net-enabled colour televisions market in India, Videocon International is targeting a market share of 45 per cent by the end of the year 2001.

The company currently has a share of 35 per cent. With an investment of Rs 400 crore, Videocon International and California- based Telecruz Technologies Inc are jointly introducing a micro-chip embedded internet television in India on Thursday through select dealers. The new technology is an in-built installation of micro-chip called television application protocol (TAP). Videocon International chairman & managing director V N Dhoot told The Financial Express: "The application will bring about the convergence from an information technology platform to interactive television." Earlier, the company had introduced a Web-enabled television with the set-top boxes priced at Rs 6,990 in the Indian market. "For the set-top boxes, the customers had to wait for five days to get Internet connection. Hence, the company has made key changes in the product profile so as to avail of the net connection as soon as the person logs on. It is, in fact, more user-friendly," point out dealers.

Claims Mr Dhoot: "Though other companies have introduced Net-enabled television with external devices such as set-top boxes and an in-built modem, the new convergence feature introduced by Videocon has the capacity to automatically check one's mail and has a light that blinks on the panel that urges one to log on and check one's inbox for new mail. Also, the magnified feature makes easy Internet viewing."

For the purpose, the company has tied up with hellovol.com. "Our in-built portal hellovol will make life simpler for the net surfers so that they don't need to spend time searching for sites as hellovol opens a window to the worldwide web. Hellovol.com provides the facility for the non-resident Indians to send gifts to their relatives residing in India as well as send messages.
