Maruti management refuses suspension order withdrawal

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
New Delhi, Oct 27: The management of Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) toughened its stand on the wage-related battle with its workers' union, refusing to withdraw the good-conduct undertaking and suspension and dismissal orders against 24 employees, even as Maruti workers claimed that four ancillary makers' unions have joined their agitation.

However, the management has agreed to discuss a fresh pension scheme ``after normalcy is restored'' at its Gurgaon plant, Maruti Udyog managing director Jagdish khattar said in a letter to the employees.

While Maruti Udyog Employees' Union (MUEU) general secretary Mathew Abraham claimed that workers of four of Maruti's leading ancillary manufacturers have joined the wage agitation with MUEU and gone on a two-hour tools-down strike, the respective companies have denied any such event saying production was normal.

The ancillary manufacturers were Sona Koyo Steering Systems, Bharat Seats, Jai Bharat Maruti and Mark Auto. Mr Abraham said, ``The ancillary units have joined the agitation after their 72-hour notice that was issued earlier this week.''

The CEOs of the respective companies, when contacted stated that there has not been any unrest at their facilities. ``Production has been normal and our workers' unions are not interested in joining the agitation with MUEU,'' Sona Koyo Steering managing director Surinder Kapur said. Jai Bharat Maruti managing director SK Arya and Bharat Seats MD Rohit Relan also aired similar views stating that the MUEU has failed to convince their workers' union to join the agitation.

MUL spokesman added, ``Having seen the production and despatches steadily rising as more and more people are returning to work at Maruti, the MUEU in a last desperate move tried to mobilise support from the employees of Maruti's joint venture companies. The MUEU has failed at this attempt also, as it has not been able to elicit support from the worker's union of our joint venture companies. The production and working at all our joint ventures was normal, today.''
