Pentamedia Graphics floats Num TV arm in the US

Anand Krishnamoorthy
Bangalore : In a move to strengthen the presence of Num TV in the US market, the Chennai-based Pentamedia Graphics has set up a wholly owned subsidiary Num Media Inc, USA. The subsidiary will distribute content and collect revenue from Num TV subscribers in the US, according to Pentamedia Graphics, director and chief operating officer, Mr K Srinivasan. The content for Num TV will be provided by Pentamedia.

Num TV is an entertainment-to-consumer portal of Pentamedia. It Webcasts content over the Internet and thereby facilitates access across the globe. Webcasting and media streaming content is considered a red hot niche in the technology sector and industry estimates expect it to be worth $10 billion by the year 2005.

Initial investments in Num TV have been pegged around $13 million and company officials expect it to break even in six months. Three years hence they expect it to be the major contributor to the company's revenues. The portal went commercial recently and has more than 5000 subscribers and 1,00,000 users.

The entertainment portal, which currently uplinks from Singapore, Webcasts its own content along with feeds from third party providers such as satellite channels like Sun TV, Sony, etc. Its range of home channels include religion, cuisine, fashion and sports among others. It recently roped in former Indian cricket captain Mr Srikkanth to act as its sports consultant. Num TV will negotiate Internet rights of cricket matches and Webcast them over the Net.

Other initiates of Num TV include the setting up of Num Learn which aims to impart distance learning on information technology topics. This would be a paid service. The Web-caster is also planning to tap other markets such as China and other Asian countries.
