Bharti Telesoft scouting for overseas alliances

Bangalore : The Information Technology arm of Bharti Group, Bharti Telesoft Ltd is scouting for strategic overseas partners in the areas of telecom, e-commerce and m-commerce, according to the company's chief executive officer, Mr Swaroop Sinha.

Mr Sinha told The Financial Express that the company was currently in the process of identifying partners overseas. ``As a product-focused company, we are looking at partners who can compliment our business,'' he said.Mr Sinha said the company had recently set up a subsidiary -- Bharti Telesoft Plc -- in the UK and a branch office in the US. Initially, the company would employ 30 people in its offices overseas.

Recently, the company set up its second software development centre in the country in Bangalore. The company already has a development facility in Delhi. Currently, both facilities together has a personnel strength of around 200 and by the end of the fiscal it would be enhanced to 350.

Bharti Telesoft develops SMS (short message service) and WAP based-banking applications. ``We have implemented our banking solutions in HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank in Delhi,'' he said.

He said, Mumbai-based trading firm Gugia Cap was in the process of implementing the company's stock trading applications. ``National Stock Exchange has plans to use our software. With NSE using our products, other bourses too are expected to pick up our products,'' he said. The company was also in the process of developing a mobile ticketing application software, he said.

Mr Sinha said, under e-commerce the company was concentrating on building portals. The company had recently designed a site for sister concern AirTel -- airtelworld.com. The site was recently launched in Delhi and would go online in Karnataka by November. The site would be connected to payment gateways and it would also facilitate subscription information.

The company's telecom division was currently building various VoIP products. ``We are planning to build a switchless exchange based on VoIP,'' Mr Sinha said. The company was also working on bluetooth protocol stacks, he said.Bharti Telesoft was also into fraud detection and call centre management software. Recently the company implemented a fraud detection project for Zambia Telecom, Mr Sinha said.

Bharti Telsoft's clientele include Motorola, Aplion Network, WorkComm, etc. The company recently tied-up with the US-based Xlibris and UK-based Calleo for e-commerce related software development. Nortel Networks was also outsourcing some work to the company, he said.

During fiscal 2000-2001, the company was targeting a turnover of over Rs 10 crore. At the inception -- in May 1999 -- Bharti Telesoft had invested around Rs 10 crore, he said. Intel Capital had a 20 per cent stake in Bharti Telesoft while the rest was held by Bharti Enterprises, Mr Sinha said.
