Seagate to go into overdrive with 180 GB Barracuda

It's the mother of all disk drives and it is going to be here soon. Seagate Technology is launching the largest-ever hard disk drive with 180 GB capacity within a fortnight, globally. The new hard disk drive-named Barracuda 180-will have the capacity to store a stack of memos taller than three times the height of the Empire State Building. Or, more practically: 200 movies on your computer. While talking to The Financial Express, the in-charge of sales and marketing of Seagate in Indian subcontinent, Mr Sharad Srivastava said that over the next two weeks, Seagate will be launching four new drives: Barracuda 36 ES, Barracuda 180, Cheetah 36XL and Cheetah 73LP. These are SCSI drives and will be available in sizes ranging from 18 GB to 180 GB, he added. The first of the series, Barracuda 36 ES was launched in India today. Seagate, in its literature claims, that Barracuda 180 will be the largest capacity drive ever manufactured.The drive will have the spindle speed of 7200 rounds per minute (RPM) and will have maximum 16 MB cache memory. The drive will provide the reliability of 1.2 million hours of mean time between failure (MTBF). It will be suitable for bulk storage solutions such as data warehousing, data marts, audio visuals, e-commerce, graphics and imaging. Barracuda 36ES is the first drive from the block of four which was launched on Thursday in India. It is available in two sizes: 18.4 and 36.9 GB and will be suitable for CAD/CAM, multimedia and LAN-less backup solutions. It has already been launched in the market with a suggested price of $319 for 18.4 Gb and $519 for 36.9 GB. The Cheetah family has a higher RPM rate as compared to Barracuda and available with 10,000 RPM as standard. The Cheetah 36 XL will be available in 9.2 GB, 18.4 GB and 36.7 GB size. The drive will be suitable for high-end work-stations and mid-size servers for applications such as Local Area Networks, video editing and Internet server. Cheetah 73LP, targeted for high performance enterprise servers will be available only with 36.7 GB capacity.
