New Delhi, Nov 5 : Post-deregulation, Indian iron and steel industry saw an impressive export performance in the past decade, with total exports of the finished products rising from a base as low as 0.3 million tonnes (MT) to over 3.1 MT in 1999-2000.The figure had touched 2.2 million tonnesin 1993-94, showing a phenomenal annual growth rate of more than 90 per cent during the first three years.While exports of total saleable steel rose from 0.31 MT in 1990-91 to 2.788 MT in 1993-94 and 3.499 MT in 1999-2000, total export of iron and steel rose from 0.31 MT in 1990-91 to 3.408 MT in 1993-94 and 3.699 MT in 1999-2000, official figures show.
While export of flats rose from 0.183 million tonnes in 1990-91 to touch 2.299 MT in 1999-2000, non-flats exports rose from 0.127 million tonnes in 1990-91 to 0.88 million tonnes in 1999-2000.
By far the most impressive growth was recorded by hotrolled (HR) coil, skelp and strip, which initially dipped from five thousand tonnes in 1991-92 to two thousand tonnes the next year but shot up by leaps and bounds to 1.4 million tonnes in 1999-2000.
Cold-rolled (CR) coil and sheet exports rose from 2000 tonnes in 1992-93 to 0.161 MT in 1999-2000.
In the non-flat category, while pig iron exports rose from 16000 tonnes in 1992-93 to 0.2 million tonnes in the last fiscal, semis shot up from 5000 tonnes to 0.32million tonnes in 1999-2000.
