Uma Bharti joins Union Cabinet, Jaitley elevated
Uma Bharti was on Tuesday sworn-in as a Cabinet minister and Law Minister Arun Jaitley was elevated to Cabinet rank in a minor expansion and reshuffle of portfolios in the Vajpayee Cabinet. BJP's tribal leader Karia Munda, however, declined to join the ministry. The father of the Green Revolution in the country and elder Statesman C Subramaniam passed away on Tuesday, when his family members were taking him to hospital, following complaints of breathlessness. Mr Subramaniam, who had occupied many important posts at the Centre and was Maharashtra Governor from 1990 to 1993, breathed his last while being taken in a car to hospital at 1 PM, his son said. Mr Subramaniam was 90. His funeral would be held today, his family announced.
Easy targets
At this point of time, any investor can buy at least five A-Group companies with less than Rs 100 crore each. These are Atlas Copco, Esab India, Bausch & Lomb, Sesa Goa and Trent. They are not at all in bad shape. Most of them made profit during the last quarter.
MTNL listing on NYSE by year-end
After a delay of nearly an year, MTNL is likely to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange by December-end or early January next, company sources said. ``We have submitted all clarifications sought by the Securities and Exchange Commission with regard to MTNL's accounting practices and other related information," agencies reported MTNL sources as saying.
IOC, ONGC, RIL among top 1,000 firms
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Reliance industries are among the 20 public and private sector Indian companies to find a place in top 1,000 companies of Asia by the Hong Kong-based magazine Asiaweek. The Indian entities include 12 PSUs, six private corporates and two joint sector companies, the magazine said in its latest issue.
Toshiba, Siemens tie up for 3G phones
Japan's Toshiba Corp and Siemens AG of Germany said they were joining forces in an unprecedented alliance to develop and produce third-generation (3G) mobile telephones. The first attempt by Japanese and European manufacturers to jointly develop 3G handsets aims to make compatible cellular phones available early in 2002.
NSE, BSE talking to LSE
India's major bourses are in talks with London Stock Exchange (LSE) for implementing a `sophisticated system' for curbing insider trading as directed by Sebi. Top officials of the NSE and the BSE were recently in touch with the LSE for a software system that detects insider trading.
