Spice Telecom to provide roaming service in USA by November-end

Our eFE Bureau
Spice Telecom, Calcutta's premier cellular service provider, has tied up with three US telecom companies to provide roaming services in the USA by the end of November this year. The three companies are PowerTel, Voice Stream and NexTel.

Spice Cell Ltd's chief operating officer Mr Arun Kapoor announced at a press conference here on Tuesday.

He said the roaming services will be initially provided to eight cities of USA through GSM network. It would be the 50th country for Spice to have its operations. It is also looking for Canadian market.

For the Skyphone mobile connect, it has entered into a strategic tie-up with the Skyphone Consortium consisting two of the world's telecom majors - British Telecommunications and Singapore Telecom.

Spice customers flying abroad and who need to be in constant touch with their counterparts anywhere in the world can now avail of a Skyphone mobile connect (SMC) card which can be used on any aircraft which is equipped with or provides the Skyphone service.

To make a Skyphone call, a Spice customer has to simply swipe his SMC card through the groove in the handset and dial. To receive calls on Skyphone he has to simply swipe his SMC card and dial 6565.

During the flight, a Spice customer will now be able to receive all calls made to his mobile number. Once the call is terminated, the cost of the call will be charged to Spice Telecom mobile account. The airtime charge is $10 per minute.
