Better quality teas with seasonal character commanded good prices at Calcutta sale 45. Continuous offtake by Iran also helped maintain stability in prices of good Orthodox teas. Prices of remaining lines eased following lower demand.The CTC sale saw good general demand for 60,648 chests of teas with more than 85 per cent being sold. Better teas in the good Assam brokens and fannings categories quoted at past levels while remaining teas including medium Assams and Dooars eased on declining quality. Prices of good Assam brokens was maintained at Rs 78-88 per kg while fannings in same grade were selling at Rs 75-85 per kg as against Rs 78-85 in the previous week. The medium Assam brokens eased in prices by Rs 3-4 per kg and sold at Rs 58-66 per kg. Fannings prices eased further at Rs 55-65 a kg. Dooars suffered some withdrawals and sold at Rs 53-62 a kg.
Good liquoring teas werebought by Hind Lever and the Gujarat buyers even as other domestic sections were active. The CIS shippers bought selected CTCs.
There was an improvement in the consumption and prices of whole leaf teas at the Darjeeling sale, where 6436 packages were offered. Improved offtake by the Continental and UK buyers and Hind Lever helped prices look up for well made whole leaf and bolder brokens. Medium brokens and fannings were lifted by the West Bengal traders at lower levels.
The prices of good whole leaf ruled at Rs 150-300 a kg as against Rs 90-120 in past sale. All brokens looked up at Rs 65-150 per kg from Rs 50-130 while all fannings quoted at Rs 45-100 a kg.
Guwahati sale
There was less general demand at Guwahati sale no 45 where 113,295 chests of CTC teas were offered and around 60 per cent sold.
Few clean liquoring teas sold at last levels while prices of all remaining grades, including medium Assams and plainer teas, eased.
In an offering of 49,040 chests of Dust teas barely 45 per cent was sold showing very poor demand. Some selected bright liquoring lines sold at the previous week's levels. All other grades, including non-liquoring and fibrous Dusts were easy and also met with limited enquiry.
Good liquoring teas attracted good competition among Hind Lever and Tata Tea and western Indian markets. Other sections were selective.
