Hyderabad, Nov 10: The World Bank president James D Wolfensohn has announced a fund sanction to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore to the Andhra Pradesh government supporting the proposed Rural Poverty Reduction Project. "This amount will be program-linked and released in phases", Mr Wolfensohn said on Friday.The proposed project will cover 14 districts in the state focusing on human development and in creating and maintenance of economic assets affecting the poor. The programme will concentrate on six areas of development such as, nutrition, primary health, primary education, rural roads upgrading and maintenance, irrigation rehabilitation and maintenance, and public enterprise reform.
Responding to a question, Mr Wolfensohn refuted the criticism that the World Bank is dictating terms to the countries availing its aid. "We help, we do not dictate", he said. Mr Wolfensohn's visit was greeted by demonstrations by the nine left parties in the state. While expressing his utmost satisfaction, the way the state government is implementing the bank's funded projects in the state, he said that the bank will continue its support to the proposed poverty eradication programme.
