Hughes Software eyes $400 million revenue from VoIP in three years

New Delhi : Riding on the convergence boom, Hughes Software Systems, a networking software development company, aspires to earn around $400 million revenue worldwide from Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network applications alone in next three years. The company has already developed software products on VoIP packet technology such as Media Gateway, Media Gateway Controller, Signalling Gateway, Residential Gateways, etc.

The products have recently been launched internationally and are available in India also. These products allow the service providers to build solutions on converged networks offering services like pre-paid, click to dial, virtual private network and interactive Voice response. While talking to The Financial Express, the president and managing director of Hughes Software, Mr Arun Kumar, said that the total VoIP software business worldwide will be to the tune of $6 billion worldwide in next three years. Out of this, around $4 billion business is expected to go to big telecom network companies and rest $2 billion will be shared by medium and small companies.

"Hughes Software is expected to acquire 15 to 20 per cent of the pie left for small and medium players," said Mr Kumar. The focus of the company is on multimedia traffic, which will travel on packet network either on wire or wireless, said Mr Kumar, adding that the Hughes have developed expertise on all the protocols of packet technology and have prepared all of these software boxes already.

"The company is targeting its products for Internet and broadband service providers and original network equipment manufacturers," he added. According to Mr Kumar, in the last three year, the company has spent 10-12 per cent of its revenue to acquire expertise in these technology. Hughes has developed a series of VoIP solutions under the name of MultiQuick for gateways and gatekeepers. These solutions are built around MGCP/MEGACO, SIGTRAN and H.323 standards, said Mr Kumar. The product portfolio of the company in this segment also include a series of portable protocol stacks solutions called ProtoQuick based on SS7, B-SS7, V5.2, VB5, GR-303, ISDN, H.323, ATM, FR, and other Internet working functions.

The company also has IntelliQuick series of mediation devices and intelligent peripherals. Hughes Software is a subsidiary of Hughes Network System, a unit of $6.4 billion Hughes Electronics Corporation of the USA. The company has development facilities in Gurgaon and Bangalore with sales and support office network spread in the US and the UK.
