Hughes Electronics may make foray into DTH market in India

A General Motor-Hughes group company, Hughes Electronics Corporation, is planning to enter the Direct-to-Home (DTH) services in India. The company is one of the largest DTH operators in the United States. When asked, the president and managing director of Hughes Software Systems, a network software arm of Hughes Electronics said that Hughes is currently evaluating its options to enter the Indian DTH market. However, no final decision has been taken so far, he added.

Mr Kumar refused to divulge any further details of the company's plans saying that it is too early to say anything. After the recent Government's decision to allow DTH in India, only two companies Zee Telefilms and Sterling group have formally announced their plans to enter DTH operations. It is believed that Star Television and Ispat group are also planning to venture into the DTH platform. Incidentally, Ispat is associated with Hughes in HughesTele.com, earlier known as Hughes Ispat Ltd, for operating basic telephone service in Maharashtra and Goa.
