Star TV gets first pay TV licence from Pakistan

Our eFE Bureau
Mumbai : Star TV has been granted the first pay TV licence by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and will start selling decoders for its pay channels. The entire bouquet of Star Network pay channels will be available except Star News. SkyNews will be the alternative provided by the Rupert Murdoch-owned network. "Star News has not been given permission. We will have SkyNews instead," said the Star TV spokesperson. Star Network's pay TV services were viewed by Pakistanis through illegal decoders.

Now Star will be allowed to sell the decoders and collect subscription revenues from cable operators in Pakistan. "Decoders were earlier being supplied illegally from across the border or Dubai. That will stop now," said the spokesperson. Star TV's ad sales and distribution operations in Pakistan were earlier handled from its Dubai office.
