Mumbai : Yash Chopra, the renowned film maker, is planning to set up a fully integrated studio in Mumbai. This was disclosed by the veteran producer-director while speaking to The Financial Express. The studio to be called Yash Raj Studios is in continuation with the Yash Raj banner promoted by Mr Chopra. The banner, according to Mr Chopra is ready with the "the design and the blue print for the project." He was, however, unwilling to disclose investment details for the project. "We will be approaching banks and financial institutions shortly with our proposal" he said. Terming the studio his "dream project, Mr Chopra said this project was his payback to the film industry. The banner has already acquired land in Andheri, a Mumbai suburb, for the studio. Mr Chopra said he was looking at a three year period for the studio to be completely operational. "The studio will cater to all the banners in the Hindi film industry and will not be restricted to only Yash Raj" he added. According to him, there has not been any new studio in Mumbai in the last twenty five years.
"The large scale investment and low recovery time have been the deterrents" he explained. He also admitted that his project "is unlikely tobe commercially viable." The studio comes up at a time when there is a revival of popular cinema coupled with extensive usage of studio facilities.
On the facilities that will be available in Yash Raj Studios, Mr Chopra said it would be a "combination of indoor and post production." He elaborated that post production would consist of dubbing, mixing, editing and music recording. At this stage, many film studios themselves are busy upgrading their existing facilities. This is to ensure that there is a better standard of production and also to have all the facilities "under one roof." Yash Raj Films has been in the Hindi film business for three decades now.
Some of the mega blockbusters from the banner include "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge", "Dil To Pagal Hai" and the more recent "Mohabbatein." The banner initially began with production before diversifying into film distribution. Among the films that the banner has distributed in India and the overseas markets are "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Refugee" and "Kaho Na Pyaar Hai." Yash Raj Films also distributes videos and DVDs under the label of Yash Raj Entertainment.
A recent venture has been Metavision which specialises in television software and promoting music albums and videos.
