Ranbaxy Lab launches Website on Viagra

Sanjay Sardana
New Delhi : Ranbaxy Laboratories is set to launch a specialised Website before the actual launch of the Indian version of the wonder drug, Viagra. The site is named after Ranbaxy's drug's brand name, Caverta, and will be up and running after the Drug Controller General of India permits marketing of the product.

"Caverta.com will offer details about the product and will help in avoiding any misuse, as has been feared by the industry. It will give details about the dosages, the side effects of the drug and other basic details as to who should use it or why is should be taken," Ranbaxy regional director, Mr SD Kaul told The Financial Express.

We at Ranbaxy aim to create awareness among people as well as doctors about the drug, sildenafil citrate and to let them them know that it is a scientific product meant for treatment and not cure, Mr Kaul added. We want to make sure that it is a product meant to provide relief to the Indian population, he added.

Corporates like Ranbaxy, Cadila, Alembic and Unichem are awaiting the final approval to market their version of the drug in India.Incidentally, the director general has already forwarded the file to DCGI which along with its recommendations has sent it for the final approval to market the product to the union health minister, Dr CP Thakur.

Currently, the drug is being imported into India and sold through the grey market at a price ranging from Rs 300-500 per tablet of 50 mg. Overseas, the drug is priced around $11-12 per tablet.

However, most of the domestic manufacturers of desi viagra are likely to price the product in the price range of Rs 20-30 per tablet, said an industry source.

Mr Kaul of Ranbaxy said that we will price the product competitively and will pass on the benefit to the masses. Like Ranbaxy, Zydus Cadila group has already worked out a sales promotion strategy for the launch of the product. The marketing division of Zydus Cadila, Zydus Alidac, has also launched a Website, www.penegra.org, in a bid to educate, create awareness and provide information prior to the launch of desi Viagra.

The site will work as a patient information tool providing in-depth information on sexual health and erectile dysfunction and by providing factual information on the problem, its causes and treatment, it also aims to demystify this health concern, said a Cadila source.
