BBC World's `Inside Dotcoms: Tales of the Electronic Goldrush' will on Saturday show the workings of some of the innovative dotcoms. In the episode to be aired at 1.40 p.m tomorrow, three portals - wcities.com, petspark.com and amplebosom.com - have been covered. In this episode, which is the second of the four-part series, `Inside Dotcoms' actually gets into the inside story of how a dotcom idea is floated, how negotiations are held with bankers for a loan, how people are hired and infrastructure is set up, and finally how the entire dotcom project is executed.
What's common between the three dotcoms to be showcased in the programme is that all of them have a unique idea behind them. For instance, in wcities.com, the new idea is in providing all location-based information on travel, entertainment, hotel, shopping, sport, local events, city guide, historical background, etc, on various WAP-enabled mobile devices. And, as the narrator of the programme explained, the success behind wcities.com lies in the fact that it's a B2B, and not a B2C portal. Instead of supplying the information directly to the consumer, wcities.com decided to tie up with mobile phone companies, who in turn, passed on the service to their subscribers.
Again petspark.com was sparked by a unique idea while some friends were chatting during teatime in London. They were generally talking about pets and the interests and the problems of pet lovers, when the bright idea of a portal about pet lovers struck them. However, what made petspark.com a success story is that it's not just a meeting place for pet lovers, but also a place for shopping for the pets. And while the business angle makes the portal a profit centre, there's a funzone with cartoon characters for greater eyeballs.
Similarly, amplebosom.com is fired by an idea which is different from the rest. Says Sally, the founder of the portal: ``I was always dissatisfied with the lingerie I bought. So, I thought of creating a portal where I could satisfy the buyers.'' As promised, the portal does a neat job of cataloguing, complete with a measurement guide and `search' by size and design. The result, according to the programme, is that Sally is getting an average of 30 orders a day, and she's thinking of another bank loan to expand her business.
