Kerala gives `right of way' to nine companies for laying optical fibre cables

Thiruvananthapuram: Decks have been cleared for laying fibre optic cables along the state highway by private telecom companies with the government committee approving all the nine applications for `right of way' that were pending before it. The recommendation would be forwarded to the state Cabinet and now it is for the state Cabinet to implement the decision, the state IT Department officials said here on Wednesday. Among the telecom and IT firms that had submitted applications included Asianet Satellite Communications Ltd, BPL, Reliance, Bharti Telesonics, Dishnet, Zee Interactive, Escotel, which together had proposed an investment of Rs 2,240 crore in various infrastructure projects. The decision is likely to have a major impact on the bandwidth availability for IT export firms in the state. Each of the firms have also guaranteed 2 MBps connectivity for government for implementinge-governance projects and networking of departments.
