Ahmedabad, Dec 9: Broadcast Worldwide chairman and chief executive officer Rathikant Basu finds it only a matter of time before the governments are compelled to abandon any form of restriction on content in the electronic media since censorship of Internet was not feasible and since both audio and video can be freely transmitted over the worldwide web.Delivering the 21 st convocation address at National Institute of Design (NID) here, he said that governments which tried to shield what they believed to be fragile cultures have had to open their skies and deregulate their media. The latest example is the Indian government's somersault on direct-to-home (DTH) TV. He pointed out how satellite television had been able to make a mockery of national political boundaries and artificial barriers to the flow of information erected by insecure totalitarian regimes, which eventually led to re-drawing of the political atlas of a large part of the world.
At the same time, he said, the same media has been held responsible for thousands of deaths in Mumbai and elsewhere after the destruction of the mosque at Ayodhya. BBC had shown the visuals that DD tried to suppress. Mr Basu said from his own experience as a civil servant in Gujarat DD and Star TV, that the media in all countries had respected the sensitivities of the society they addressed.
