Netplane's IP routing product slated for launch in Q1 of 2001

R Ravichandran
Hyderabad : The US-based Netplane Systems Inc, an arm of $2.2 billion Conexant Systems Inc, will launch sophisticated carrier class IP (Internet Protocol) Routing product and AAL 2 (ATM Adoption Layer 2) worldwide in the first and second quarter of 2001 respectively.

"Both the technology products, targeted at next generation network systems, are being developed by its 100 per cent Indian subsidiary - Netplane Network Technologies (India) Pvt Limited," Naresh Malipeddi, chief executive officer, Netplane India, told The Financial Express.

NetPlane India is fast developing the highly sophisticated and revenue generation carrier class IP Routing product which will address the requirements of scaleability, redundancy and resilience for the equipment vendors targeting the next generation Internet infrastructure, Mr Malipeddi said.

He said the first release will include Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol and followed by release of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP4), Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS - IS) and multicast routing protocols.

Explaining the details, Anil Grovor, director of software, Netplane India, said it has become evident through our customers that a void exists within the IP routing system. Many companies developing networking equipment, with demanding time to market constraints and carrier class requirements.

Most of them are forced to compromise and use products that are not optimised for their products or target markets, Mr Grovor claimed. "Keeping in mind the changing needs for standardised products, we at Netplane have decided to bring in the latest product for the next generation equipment manufacturers," Mr Grovor said adding "there is a huge pent up demand for this product worldwide".

Coming to AAL2, Mr Malipeddi said Netplane is also developing AAL2 product that will mark the foray of the company in voice networking technologies.According to him, voice over ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) is better served by utilising the variable bit rate (VBR) service of AAL2 rather than using the less efficient AAL1 constant bit rate (CBR). With variable bit rate AAL2 voice, bandwidth savings of upto 8:1 are achievable by utilising features such as compression, silence suppression and idle channel removal, Mr Grovor explained.
