Maruti Udyog claims normal production despite strike

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
New Delhi, Dec 20 : Market leader Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) on Wednesday claimed that its Gurgaon plant in Haryana was operating at normal production capacity level in spite of labour unrest.

The automobile manufacturer on an average produced 1200-1250 vehicles per day, which is the normal production capacity of the plant, in the first fortnight of December, a company spokesperson told PTI here.

While the company produced 1,311 passenger cars per day on an average during November, the marginal loss in output during the first two weeks of December was due to the general lean period the whole of automobile sector faces close to Christmas, he said.

"Maruti's daily production is now close to anticipated market demand at this time," he said.

Since October 12, when labour unrest at the factory had led to fall in production to a record low of 299 units a day, production has risen touching 928 vehicles per day by the end of October and resorting to 1205 vehicles per day production capacity of pre-agitation period, in the first week of November, the spokesperson said.

"The company had a market share of 60 per cent in November despite the strike. The market share could, however, be little less in December," he said.
