Calcutta, Dec 20 : Two-wheeler major Yamaha Motor Escorts Ltd, a 74:26 joint venture between Yamaha Motor Company Ltd of Japan and the Delhi-based Escorts group, has shelved plans to make scooters, according to the company's marketing director."The motorcycle segment in India is growing rapidly at the expense of scooters. We don't want to enter the scooter segment right now... We will wait for at least another two years before taking a decision in this regard," said Mr Koji Harada, marketing director of Yamaha Motor Escorts.
Yamaha will focus entirely on the burgeoning motorcycles segment in India, another company official said. Motorcycles, especially the four-stroke variants, have been growing at a healthy pace over the last one year.
"There has been a growth of 30 per cent in the overall sales of motorcycles and a healthy 40 per cent growth in the four-stroke category," said Mr Sharad Mahendra, eastern zonal manager of Yamaha Motor Escorts.
The company plans to add models at a brisk rate. "We hope to roll out a new model from the Yamaha stable every six months," said Mr Mahendra. So far, the company has introduced three models - YBX 125, YD 125 and CRUX - in the four-stroke category. Company officials said the 106cc Crux's technology and design are based on exhaustive research and development done by the Japanese parent.
The bike also has a cost advantage, priced a good two to three thousand less than the others in its category. Crux costs around Rs 42,000 and has a fuel efficiency of a close to 70km to a litre on the Indian roads.
On the flip side, however, it is understood that the company is losing quite a big chunk of its marketshare to rival two-wheeler manufacturers.
Bajaj Auto with its Caliber brand and Hero Honda with Splendor have been the front-runners so far in the four-stroke motorcycles segment. TVS Suzuki, too, has come out with a four-stroke model called Fiero.
Yamaha has invested about Rs 205 crore in its Indian arm over the last three years. The present equity capital of the venture is about Rs 355 crore.
