New Delhi, Dec 20: A six-member delegation of US senators and congressmen was here on a quiet one-week visit between December 7 to 14. The purpose of their visit was to assess the socio-economic and political environment prevailing in the country.The importance of the visit could be gauged by the fact that two of the delegation members, Christopher Dumm and Thomas Peter Sheehy, were representing the US congressmen Jim McDermott and Ed Royce, the co-chairmen of the Caucus on India and Indian American Affairs.
The delegation took interest in issues pertaining to infotech and new economy, defense, cross-boarder terrorism, health and developmental issues.During their stay in the country, the team visited the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the Institute for defense Studies & Analyses (IDSA), and the facilities of Infosys and Digital in Bangalore.
The delegation met senior government officials in the ministry of defense, external affairs and home affair.Besides visiting Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore, the team went to Amritsar to assess the prevailing socio-political situation in Punjab. Their Jaipur visit, however, was a pleasure trip, a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) official told The Financial Express .
The visit was sponsored by the apex industry association."The delegation was impressed to see the working atmosphere of Infosys and compared it at par with the headquarters of Microsoft. In fact, they expressed their desire to invest in Infosys stock. A CII official accompanying the team said.
CII organised the team visit to strengthen the tie-up between the two countries. The team will submit its report to the US congressmen and senators to chalk out their future strategy on India, the official said.The other members of the delegation were Andrew Kent Bonham, legislative director to senator Chuck Hagel, Enere Henry Levi representing congressman Eni Faleomavaega, Kapil Sharma, from the office of senator Torricelli, and Ms Charisse Glassman, representing congressman Donald M Payne.
