Kolkata, Jan 7: Ailing Alpha Drug India Ltd, controlled by DSM Fine Chemicals BV of the Netherlands, is likely to gain from the imposition of anti-dumping duty on the anti-bacterial trimethoprim, one of the main products of the company.The Patiala-based company, struggling against cheap imports from China, had petitioned the Union ministry of commerce for imposition of an anti-dumping duty of $3.26 million on every kg of trimethoprim. The government imposed a duty on October 18, in line with the company's demand. The directors' report, signed November 11, 2000, does not acknowledge this, but expresses the hope that the imposition of anti-dumping duty will help improve its profitability.
The company reported a sharp decline in losses in the fiscal ending March 31, 2000, from that of the previous year, but the accumulated losses have wiped out over half its net worth. t reported a net loss of Rs 3.46 crore for the year to March 31, 2000, against Rs 5.69 crore in the previous year.
