New Delhi, Jan 17: The six Indian pharmaceutical companies, which are launching local versions of Viagra, are now busy chalking out aggressive marketing strategies to grab a larger share of the existing Rs 50-crore viagra market, which they believe has a potential to grow 10-fold.Sun Pharmaceutical, which has launched the desi version of Sidenafil Citrate under the brand name `Edegra,' is banking on the 2,500-strong network of psychiatrists across the country.
"Through our Synergy and Symbiosis divisions, we already have strong presence among the psychiatrists," Sun Pharma general manager (marketing) Lokesh Sibal told The Financial Express.
Besides Sun Pharma, five other pharmaceutical companies Ranbaxy Laboratories, Zydus Cadila, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Unichem Laboratories and Cipla too have also launched their versions of Sidenafil Citrate.
Sun Pharmaceuticals has priced the Edegra competitively and the 25 mg tablet will cost Rs 12, 50 mg tablet Rs 18 and 100 mg Rs 25.
Sun Pharma expects to grab about Rs 8 crore market in the first year itself, Mr Sibal said, adding that besides psychiatrists, the company was relying on urologists, sexologists and endocrinologists to market the product.
"Today, more than 52 per cent of the men in the age group of 40-70 years suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Edegra (Sidenafil Citrate), an oral therapy drug for men with erectile dysfunction, is an effective medicine which has a proven success rate in erection in four out of five men using it," Sun Pharma senior vice-president marketing Shyamal Ghosh said during the launch of Edegra here on Wednesday.
