Jaipur : Online filing of sales tax returns and yearly assessments will begin in Rajasthan from September next, sources in the commercials taxes department told The Financial Express here on Thursday. The whole taxation structure in the state is being streamlined and a network will soon be put in place so as to give relief to the traders. The number of dealers registered with the department is 1.50 lakhs, but only about 1200-odd pay 80 per cent of the total sales tax collections. Last year the department collected Rs 2,425 crore as sales tax and this year the figure could rise to Rs 2,800 crore. The target for the year was earlier fixed at Rs 3,030 crore. All the 67 sales tax check posts in the border areas of the state are being computerised so that the trucks entering and leaving the state are checked. According to Mr Praduman Singh, Finance Minister, the government had decided to go in for "aggressive computerisation of the tax accounting system". The estimated expenditure on the work could be Rs 80 crore. "By the end of this year the department will introduce electronic banking and computerised branches will collect the sales tax," said the Minister. The tax-payer accounts will be made available on the Internet, said Mr Singh. The electronic accounts will be kept confidential and the tax payer would know at any time the exact status of the amount paid by logging onto the Website. The department would also introduce a system of automatic dissemination of notification and orders by e-mail. The commissioner will reply within 72 hours of getting any complaint.
