China goes a long way ahead with GMOs
Through a $36.25-million government-backed project China is going ahead with large-scale commercialisation of genetically modified crops. The project is expected to supply 270 tonne of corn seeds, 30 tonne of soyabeans, and 200 tonne of rice seeds in 2001. China has already commercialised GM crops like insect resistant Bt cotton, tomatoes with long shelf life and virus resistance, petunia (for colour) and virus resistant sweet pepper. About 10 per cent of China's cotton area is now transgenic. The field releases of GM crops include rice, potato, soyabean, poplar, corn, tobacco, orange, eucalyptus and rapeseed.Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
