Mumbai : Ultra Group, the Mumbai-based manufacturers and distributors of DVDs and Video Cassettes will make its debut in television software production this year. This was disclosed by Sushil Kumar Agrawal, Managing Director of the Ultra Group to eFE. The group is also in the process of setting up a Rs 3 crore post-production studio for this television software venture. Three serials in Hindi and one each in Gujarati and Marathi form the first phase of the group's television debut. According to Mr Agrawal, the serials will be ready for telecast by April this year. The Ultra Group is currently in talks with various channels for the Hindi serials. "For Marathi, we are in talks with ETV Marathi and Alpha" said Mr Agrawal. The Ultra Group is currently negotiating with Gurjari and Alpha channels for the Gujarati serial.He added that he was looking at the 4 PM slot for the serials in Marathi and Gujarati. "All the serials will basically be social dramas" said Mr Agrawal. He added that plans were also afoot for a Hindi comedy serial. Two of the Hindi serials will be aired once a week and the other will be a daily. The serials in Gujarati and Marathi will both be weeklies. Mr Agrawal did not rule out the possibility of producing serials in other languages. "We will be considering making serials in Punjabi and Bengali sometime later" he said. The group's other plans include a venture into making telefilms in Hindi. According to Mr. Agrawal, this will have a budget of about Rs 1 crore per telefilm.
This investment, according to him, will be raised from internal sources and bank finances. "We will commence shooting of the telefilm in February this year" said Mr. Agrawal. The first telefilm will be ready for telecast by July this year. The Ultra Group was in the business of manufacturing blank video cassettes. Later, the group diversified into video cassette duplication and acquisition of video and cable rights. Today, the group has the rights to more than 1000 films and software of over 4000 hours for telecast on cable and satellite networks. Besides, the Ultra Group holds rights to films for video cassettes, video CDs and DVD rights.
