Pune, Jan 21 : Year 2000-2001 was annus horribilis. For Rahul Bajaj, this was the worst ever performance in the history of his two-wheeler empire. But, says the emperor, after hitting the lowest depths there is only one way to go. Up. The journey upwards will be on the motorcycle - with Kawasaki of Japan as the pillion rider. The empire has struck back with a Rs 88,000 rugged chopper bike - the Kawasaki Bajaj Eliminator.Bajaj Auto chairman and managing director Rahul Bajaj says the company will sell 15,000 Eliminators in the first year. The bike rolled out of the new line at the Waluj plant, which has cost the company Rs 190 crore. The production line follows the Kawasaki Production System. The Eliminator's stunning looks come with a low slung saddle seat, flamboyant handlebars, longest wheel base, 116 km per hour speed, front disc brakes, five gears and a four-stroke engine. "The objective of rolling out the bike is not to clock a great market share but to make a technology statement," says company vice-president, executive (business development and marketing) RL Ravichandran. "We have made the bike in India below the Rs 1 lakh-mark and I do not see a direct competing product," said Mr Ravichandran. This is the first of the new look bikes. Next will be the sporty 150 cc bike - Pulsar - which will be launched in April 2001. The Acer 100 cc mobike, too, will launched within three months.
