Net exchange in Mumbai by March

Mumbai : The country's first Internet exchange is likely to be set up in Mumbai by March this year. The ISP Association of India has okayed the proposal made by a few companies, including Enron and Band X, who wanted to set up such an exchange. "We looked at their presentation and it is now up to them to convince the ISPs to patronise them," said Mr Amitabh Singhal, Secretary, the Internet Services Providers' Association of India.Though it could not be confirmed from the companies, they are understood to have started approaching the ISPs already. "The smaller ISPs will follow suit once the big ones enrol," Mr Singhal said, adding that all ISPs need to connect to an Internet exchange. The Internet exchange helps ISPs manage the international and domestic traffic routing more efficiently and through the shortest route. Efficiency apart, it also leads to cost saving on the part of the ISP, and ultimately the consumer, Mr Singhal explained. Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
