Schoolnet holds Website development contest for kids

Our eFE Bureau
Pune : Schoolnet India Limited, the social infrastructure initiative and wholly-owned subsidiary of Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (ILFS), has organised an inter-school Website development contest across ten cities in the country with more than 2,500 schools participating. The district-level contest was kicked off in Pune with students in the age group of 10 to 16 creating Websites online for their own school. The Websites are to be created in a span of 90 minutes through EasyBuilder - a ready to use application for students to create Websites on their own. This will be followed by the zonal finals and end with the `Grand Slam' to be held in Mumbai on February 11, with the winners getting a month's educational trip to Canada. This contest is part of Schoolnet's K-10 program, which is a Networked Learning Program that caters to the pre-primary, primary and secondary school segments. Networked Learning integrates technology, content and training and is aimed at both students and teachers. TheK-10 Program offers schools a package of technology, content and training. A central hub at Bangalore provides a mechanism for delivering content via the Web.

Colonel Ravi Rajan, chief coordinator - Maharashtra: The K-10 Program, said Schoolnet was at present reaching out to English medium schools and more than 200 schools had become part of Schoolnet. An effort is on to extend this to other Indian languages. An MoU had been signed with Andhra Pradesh, while talks with Maharashtra were in the final stages, he said. Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are among the other states keen on introducing the program. "Depending on the response it generates regional R&D and content development centres could come up to cater to the language market requirements," Col Rajan said. For the less-privileged sections, Schoolnet is garnering support from corporates under the Schoolnet Trust.
