Mumbai : The US-based ep.net has been roped in to run India's first Internet exchange to be set up by Broadband Solutions Pvt Ltd (BSPL), the broadband subsidiary of the power and gas major Enron. ep.net is already running 42 such exchanges globally. The company hopes to enrol most of the major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) before long. "We are in talks with major ISPs in India," Col. Kuldeep Bhatnagar, director Internet Data Centre, BSPL, told The Financial Express. Explaining the rationale for picking ep.net as its partner, Col. Bhatnagar said, "ep.net is a professionally-run independent entity and has the core skill of running such an exchange." The cost of setting up the exchange will be borne by BSPL. On the issue of whether ep.net will own any equity in the company, Col Bhatnagar said, "We are looking at different models." Once the exchange is up and running, BSPL will become India's first company to set up an Internet exchange. The Internet exchange is like a traffic island through which all the traffic generated by member ISPs is routed. Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
