Shyam ACeS bags LoI for GMPS project

New Delhi : Shyam ACeS (India) Private Limited has been awarded a Letter of Intent by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to enable the company to start the first geo stationary satellite-based telephone services in India. Shyam ACeS is jointly owned by the Shyam Group of India and ACeS International. According to a press release issued by the company, the ACeS system has been designed with the objective of keeping the interests of the Asian consumers in mind and will be able to deliver affordable high quality voice across the entire footprint of the satellite, stretching from India in the West to Japan in the East and from China in the North to Indonesia and Papa Guinea in the South. The phone, manufactured by Ericsson is the world's smallest shirt pocket size hand-held phone, weighing less than 205 grams.

The phone is built as per GSM standard and will enable users to retain their existing GSM telephone numbers while roaming outside their GSM Network coverage. "With the introduction of this newtechnology, telecommunication services in India can now be provided to every part of India at very low prices, said Mr Rajiv Mehrotra, chairman, Shyam Group. The services roll-out would commence shortly with fixed phone installations in over 2.5 lakh villages.
