UAE-based business house to conduct TV quiz show

Sanu George in Thiruvananthapuram United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Atlas Jewelry has announced a Rs 3 million television quiz show for the benefit of students appearing in the coming entrance examination for professional courses in Kerala. Atlas Jewelry managing director MM Ramachandran, at a news conference here on Wednesday, said recording of the quiz program would begin here on February 8 and end on February 12. Thirteen episodes of the quiz would be aired on the Asianet television channel from the latter half of next month. Mr Ramachandran said 27 students would take part in the quiz.

Fourteen of them would be selected from several UAE schools and the remaining 13 from schools in Kerala. "The response to this from the UAE has been excellent and soon a preliminary selection would be done there. The 14 children selected would be flown to Thiruvananthapuram at our expense for the quiz," said Mr Ramachandran. The winner of the quiz contest would get a cash prize of Rs. 100,000, the runner up will get Rs50,000 and the contestant placed third would get Rs 25,000. Besides, all the participating students would be given consolation prizes. "Taking into consideration the large number of students who would see the program, there would be prizes for the audience also," said Mr Ramachandran. "As of today we have got sponsorships from Gulf Air, who would be flying the students from the UAE. We have received Rs 500,000 from sponsorships and the balance Rs. 2.5 million would be borne by Atlas Jewelry," he said. Joy Elamon, the quiz master, said the program has been designed on the lines of BBC's Mastermind. "This is the first time that such a program is being organised for the benefit of those candidates appearing for professional courses," Elamon told IANS. Meanwhile, Mr Ramachandran, whose company has 24 jewelry shops in the Middle East, said he would open branches in Kerala only when international standards of selling gold are introduced in the state.
