Metals suffer; oilseeds steady

Mumbai, Jan 24 : Bullion: Silver suffered losses at the improved level on the bullion market here. Gold also closed lower after a sharp upsurge recorded in the kerb deal on Tuesday evening, following news of brisk response by auction of gold by Bank of England, dealers said.

Silver .999 eased by Rs 15 at Rs 7,880 per kg. Silver .916 was down by Rs 30 at Rs 7,760 per kg. Demand resistance by industrial buyers arrested the rally, while continued local supplies of raw silver triggered profit taking. Weak Delhi and global advices also took heat out of the market. Traders reported arrivals of 350/400 kg of raw silver in the local market. In the overseas market silver reacted from $4.81 to $4.77 per troy ounce.

Meanwhile prices of gold biscuit (116.50 gm.) was quoted at Rs 51,950 per piece, against the peak of Rs 52,400 recorded in the kerb deal on Tuesday evening.

Standard gold closed Rs 5 higher at Rs 4,450 per 10 gm, so was gold .22 carat at Rs 4,115 per 10 gm. In the international market gold settled lower at $265.30 per troy ounce after the high of $269 recorded on Tuesday evening, following news of auction of 25 tonne which was over subscribed by nearly 5 times, dealers said.

OIL, OILSEEDS: Groundnut oil finished on a steady note on the oil, oilseeds market here. Castorseed and its oil however remained firm in ready delivery, while prices ruled weak in forward market.

Groundnut oil placed at Rs 305 per 10 kg amidst scattered supplies coupled with sluggish physical support. In Rajkot it was subuded at Rs 510/515 per 15 kg. Imported palmoil was quiet at Rs 198 per 10 kg, in absence of overseas support. Castor oil edged up by Rs 2 at Rs 283/295 per 10 kg, on fresh covering by shippers. Castorseed ready hardened by Rs 10 at Rs 1,265 per quintal.

In the futures section castorseed February delivery reacted by Rs 2 at Rs 1,272 per quintal. Castor oil February delivery recovered by Rs 3 at Rs 300 per 10 kg. Palmolien futures market remain closed today.

In Ahmedabad castorseed February delivery commenced at Rs 1,240 before closing at Rs 1,231 and April delivery, opened at Rs 1,269 and settled at Rs 1,260 per quintal respectively. Traders placed today's arrivals of castorseed in Gujarat at 30,000/32,000 bags.
