Momma's charming the world

SULEKHA NAIR
She is a lethal combination of beauty and brains. She is Dr Aditi Govitrikar, doctor, model and mother of a toddler. And once again, Ms Govitrikar is making headlines, being the first Indian to have won the `Mrs World' title.

The newly crowned Mrs World even studied for a couple of months for her post-graduate degree in gynaecology. However, the shine of the arc lights was too much to ignore and she dropped her studies and launched herself into a career of modelling and films.

With her one-and-a-half-year-old toddler, Kiara, making happy noises in the background, the contented model mom recalled her joy and ecstasy of winning the title. ``There were far too beautiful and well-toned women at the contest. I was told of the contest just 10 days prior to the event, by my husband, Mufazzal Lakdawala. He wanted me to try my luck and I was excited.

There was not much I could do by way of preparations. I got my wardrobe from Sheetal Design Studio and a trainer to do my workout. That was it. However, coming back with the crown was very nice."

Would the crown have come to her partly because now everything Indian is `in' internationally? Ms Govitrikar concedes that it could be part of the reason. The Mrs World does little to keep her body in great shape. She does not do regular workouts or has a personal trainer. "Part of the credit for it is genetic. I feel climbing stairs is the best exercise one could do to keep in shape," she says.

Ms Govitrikar got her first modelling assignment while she was in medical college for Pond's Face Wash. Then, she entered the Gladrags Super Model contest, which she won. And there's no looking back since then. In fact, it was her husband, then boyfriend, who encouraged her to go into modelling.

She met her husband, Mr Lakdawala, while both of them were studying at the Grant Medical College, Mumbai. "My husband encouraged me to do modelling and it has been that way ever since. In fact, I wouldn't be as successful as I am today if it was not for him. He is a surgeon. We understand each other well. It is his encouragement that has given me the confidence," she says, acknowledging his contribution towards her career.

Studying medicine gave her the confidence that is need to a stressful career like modelling, she says. Ms Govitrikar feels that young girls should complete their education before entering beauty contests. "I feel one should complete one's formal education. Education makes one confident. In a field like I am in today, the competition is very high and the stress levels are even higher. Education would make one look at it equanimously," she says.

With such a famous face, can the movies be far behind? Ms Govitrikar's has made a foray into tinselville. "I am doing two films- Soch with Sanjay Dutt, Arbaaz Khan and Raveena Tandon. The other film is untitled as yet. I enjoy doing films as one can portray so many different emotions. One gets into different characters and this transformation is creative and enjoyable."But does her hectic schedule leave her time for the family? "Yes," she says.

"My husband and I go out a lot. I miss Kiara if I have to go out of town for some work. But she is too small to understand but I am sure she misses me," says this proud mother. Would Kiara be following her mother soon? "No," says Ms Govitrikar firmly. "She has got a few offers already. But my husband and I would not like her to enter this profession at such a small age. We'd rather she decide for herself when she grows up."

Ms Govitrikar has everything she wants. But what does she wish for herself? "Peace of mind always," she says.
