India, Algeria set $200-million trade target within two year

Our Corporate Bureau
Mumbai, January 29: India and Algeria have set a $200 million bilateral trade target to be achieved by the year 2002, as against $50 million in 1999. This was stated by Mr Shyamal Gupta, chairman, CII Africa Committee, and director, Tata Sons, and chairman, Tata International.

Mr Gupta was addressing a meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - `Algeria: Moving Ahead Together' - to honour HE Abdelaziz Bouteflika, President of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeira. According to Mr Gupta, India and Algeria share a strong linkage in terms of political relations and goodwill among nations, which can be harnessed to strengthen economic relations. He added that the Indian industry is geared to cater to Algerian markets and provide high quality goods and services at competitive prices. He suggested formation of India-Algeria Joint Business Group at the level of the private sector.

Mr Bouteflika added that substantial reforms undertaken in Algeria cover three vital economic sectors - mines, electricity and hydrocarbons.
