Cell subscriber growth gets more broadbased

Our eFE Bureau
New Delhi : The latest cellular subscriber figures for the month of January 2001, released by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), reveal that the total cellular subscriber base continues to swell. The total number of subscribers on an all-India basis has reached 3.27 million, a straight jump of 100 per cent from the January 2000 figures of 1.66 million. While the latest figures, show the dominance of the A circles in terms of the total number of subscribers, there is a slowdown in the rate of growth, particularly in the metros, when compared to last year's data. The subscribers in the Category A circles in January 2000 were 5,17,407, which rose to 10,50,534 by January 2001. Whereas in the Category B circles the subscribers rose from 3,98,928 to 8,77,374 in the same period. In the period January 2000-2001, while the subscribers in both category A and B circles doubled, the number of subscribers in the Category C circles trebled.

In the category C circles, in the same time period, the numbers rose from 39,566 to 100,883. In the metros, however, the growth has tapered off. The number of metro subscribers rose from 712792 in January 2000 to 1245048 a year later. In absolute numbers, Mumbai has the maximum number of subscribers at 4,96,587, followed closely by Delhi at 4,86,561, while the other two metros Chennai and Calcutta still lag at 1,03,419 and 1,58,481 subscribers respectively, in January 2001.
