Our Bureau
Hyderabad, Feb 25: The Union telecommunications minister Ram Vilas Paswan has warned that punitive action will be taken against those private basic telephony service providers who fail to extend telephone services to villages before the targeted 2002 date. Speaking to presspersons on Sunday, Mr Paswan said that the NDA government has decided to impose penalties, which may also include the cancellation of licenses.According to Mr Paswan, though private operators have committed to provide basic telephone services to 58,000 villages in their respective circles, work has not yet commenced. Out of the 6,07,000 villages in the country, only about 4 lakh villages have access to telephones. Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
