The finance ministry, for the first time, included a report card on thestatus of implementation of announcements made in the Budget in the set ofdocuments released on Wednesday.The report card provides an assessment of the action taken by differentwings of the government on the announcements made finance minister in theBudget speech last year. According to finance minister Yashwant Sinha, thebrochure on the execution of schemes outlined in his last two Budgetsreflected the NDA government's commitment to ensuring transparency andaccountability in the budget-making process. In the foreword, Mr Sinha wrotethat a number of MPs had been asking him for details on the action taken bythe government pursuant to the presentation of Budgets. "This handy bookletis intended to give, in a nutshell, the progress achieved to date on thevarious items included in my Budget speeches."
Mr Sinha said that he wanted to make it a regular annual feature. Of the 49proposals listed under Budget 1999, the brochure indicates completion ofaction on 34 proposals. For the remaining proposals, the report claims, workwas progressing at a steady pace.
