Outlay increased to Rs 22,570 cr

The Plan outlay for 2001-02 for the transport sector as a whole has gone upto Rs 22,570 crore as against the revised estimate of Rs 20847.73 crore for2000-01. Out of the Plan outlay for the coming year, Rs 13,305.71 crore iscoming as the budgetary support. The lion's share of more than 60 per cent,amounting to Rs 8,727 crore, in the budgetary support, has been earmarkedfor the road sector as against Rs 5,248 crore in the revised estimates forthe current year. This will be primarily used for the National HighwayDevelopment Project (NHDP) and the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

The outlay for civil aviation sector stands reduced from the revisedestimate of Rs 1,886 crore for 2000-01 to Rs 1,641.31 crore for the comingyear. This includes Rs 63 crore as budgetary support. Within the civilaviation sector, an amount of Rs 573.66 crore has been allocated for theAirport Authority of India, Rs 6.30 crore for the north eastern region, Rs5.50 crore for director general of civil aviation and Rs 5.41 crore forbureau of civil aviation security for their plan schemes during 2001-2002.

There is also a provision for investment in Air-India of Rs 445.44 crore,Indian Airlines Rs 460 crore and Pawan Hans Helicopter Ltd Rs 127 crore. Theoutlay for shipping sector has been fixed at Rs 975.71 crore for the comingyear as against the revised estimate of Rs 2,177 crore for 2000-01. Thiswill be used for development and expansion of Indian shipping industry. Itincludes a provision of Rs 835.71 crore for the Shipping Corporation ofIndia.

The Railways has an annual Plan outlay of Rs 11,090 crore for 2001-02. Ofthis, Rs 3,540 crore will be met out of budgetary support. The targetsproposed to be achieved through the outlay is for track renewal of 3400 km,electrification of additional 350 route km, 160 route km of additional gaugeconversion, 82 km of new lines and 275 km of doubling. It will also be usedfor buying additional 180 locomotives, 23,000 wagons and 2076 coaches.
