Chennai: In the new Internet economy, storage is expanding beyond the traditional PC and server markets into emerging markets such as storage networking and consumer electronics. To leverage on the new opportunity, Seagate Technology, leading international provider of Internet infrastructure storage solutions, is looking at tying-up with consumer electronics companies in India who are looking at bringing into the market consumer devices with hard disc drives (HDDs) integrated into them. Storage used to be a `thing' inside a PC or data centre, but in today's networked world people want the security of knowing that storage, and the information that resides in it, is out there, with sites keeping as many as five copies of their data, says Mr Don Kennedy, vice president of Asia sales and marketing. In the consumer electronics market in India (like elsewhere), Seagate is looking at HDD technology in mainstream consumer devices like televisions, personal video recorders, MP3 players and cable/satellite tuners forpartnerships, he said. And we are putting intelligence on the drive so that anyone can get the information they want, when and how they want it, he said. The company has been selling HDDs in India for the use of PCs, A/V applications and has a 70 per cent share of the disc drive market in the country. It sold around 1.3 million units till September 2000, according to a company official. The company is also looking at business opportunities in the areas of network attached storage (NAS) and storage area network (SAN) solutions, the latter providing serverless back-up. It has opened an office in Delhi and has appointed three distributors in the country with presence in 30 locations between them. It has also been holding seminars and roadshows for customer awareness. Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
