Tata Engg records 11% rise in February sales

Mumbai, March 13 : Tata Engineering has reported an 11 per cent increase in vehicle sales in February 2001 as compared to January. According to the company, total vehicle sales stood at 15,597 units in February. It included 5,291 medium and heavy commercial vehicles as against 5159 vehicles for January this year, an increase of 2.6 per cent. The increase in light commercial vehicles sales was 15 per cent with 3,109 vehicles being sold.Cumulative sales for the first 11 months of the financial year stood at 1,47,862 units.

Tata Engineering's small car project Indica, which has run into a lot of problems, lately posted a better performance with the launch of the IndicaV2 in February. Passenger car sales stood at 6364 units, an increase of 22.6 per cent over January.

Cumulative sales for the first 11 months of the current financial year stood at 63,052 units.

According to the company, the new Indica V2 has received extremely encouraging response with the February sales at 3651 units, rising by 23.4 per cent over January sales.

Cumulative sales for the year stood at 38,573 units and the company expects to cross the 1 lakh-mark in sales in March 2001.

Indica's market share stood at 7.7 per cent of the total market and 10.5 per cent in its segment. Utility vehicles sales stood at 2693 units with Tata Sumo becoming the largest selling brand during the year.

Tata Engineering also had success with its limited edition Safari, which was sold out within a month of its launch. The company continues to maintain a market share of 25 per cent, with Sumo sales posting a year-on-year growth of 1.2 per cent.

Exports sales for the 11-month period ended February 2001 were 12,396 as against 8,997 in the corresponding period last year, an increase of 37.8 per cent.
