Rubber-growers look to Malaysia to resolve crisis

Kochi, March 13 : The crisis in the rubber sector could be resolved if the efforts of the present Kerala state government to seek the help of Malaysia succeed. A delegation from Malaysia is to visit the state this month and finalise deals on various projects, including transmission of technology, for starting new units, according to state minister PJ Joseph.Mr Joseph, who just returned from Malaysia, said Malaysia, which was importing around 7 lakh tonne of natural rubber, is considering importing the commodity from India. India produces nearly 7 lakh tonne of rubber and around 1.5 lakh tonne remains unutilised. The discussions were at the instance of the Malaysian rubber technology expert Tan Sri BC Sekhar, who also coordinated the discussions between the Malaysian officials and Mr Joseph.
