Alcatel plans to trim about 1,100 jobs in US
Dallas: Alcatel SA said it will cut about 1,100 positions from its US operations, including 800 full-time employees, amid slowing demand for its equipment. The French telecommunications-equipment supplier said the cuts represent less than five per cent of its US work force. The company employs about 130,000 workers world-wide. Paris-based Alcatel said affected employees will receive a severance package and outplacement services. A company spokesman said the job cuts would help boost Alcatel's bottom line. The amount of the charges hasn't yet been determined, he added. Alcatel said in early March that its handset division would post a first-quarter loss. The company also said operating income from all its telecom businesses would be about the same as the year-earlier figure of $69.5 million. At the same time, Alcatel said it would implement a cost-cutting program affecting both supply-chain and operating expenses to ensure that consolidated operating profit wasn't impacted by losses at the handset unit. -- Dow Jones Newswires Copyright © 2001 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
