The sources said Wolfgang, kidnapped from Maphou area in Thoubal district on March 23 by activists of the underground Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) was now being kept in a hotel in Imphal with security guards.

The KLA had earlier demanded Rs 1 crore for the release of the foreigner but it was not immediately known whether any amount was paid to the ultras to secure the safe release of the German.

Earlier during the day, women activists of different social organisations conducted a house-to-house search with the help of police commandos in the Langol area in Imphal to trace Wolfgang. They also launched a protest rally in the areas demanding immediate release of Wolfgang who came here to inspect functioning of some NGOs. A major separatist underground organisation, Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF) had also said in a statement earlier that Wolfgang should be freed by his captors.
