Beijing, March 9: China is negotiating with Pakistan on an agreement to build the second stage of the Chashma nuclear power plant in Punjab province. "At present, the industrial departments of the two sides have held consultations and will continue to have some talks on the projects," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao said.

"This is plant is for electricity generation and will be subject to the supervision of the IAEA," Liu told reporters when asked to confirm the visit of the chairman of Pakistan's atomic energy committee Pervez Butt for talks with

the China national nuclear cooperation here last week for setting up the 300 megawatt power plant.

He said China and Pakistan have signed an agreement in this regard several years ago for the construction of the second stage of the Chashma nuclear plant. Liu pointed out that China's cooperation with other countries in the area of nuclear technology was based on three principles - it must be for peaceful purposes, it must be under IAEA supervision, and that without the approval of the Chinese side, related and relevant technologies cannot be transferred to a third party.
