Kolkata, August 14: Rapist and murderer Dhananjoy Chatterjee, hanged to death early on Saturday morning, was cremated at the Keoratala burning ghat here by Hindu Satkar Samity, a voluntary organisation.
The authorities of Alipur Central jail, where he was executed at 4.30 am, handed over Dhananjoy's body to the Samity as his family members refused to take it, police said.
Escorted by police vehicles, the hearse carrying the body left the jail premises at around 6.5 am after post mortem.
Stringent security arrangement was made at the crematorium. Dhananjoy was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a school girl in 1990.
